Dallas Cowboys: Breaking Down Each Pick from the 2026 NFL Draft

Dallas Cowboys, 2026 NFL Draft, The League Winners

The Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones didn’t just show up to the 2026 NFL draft, they made a statement. After the first season under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, two things were made clear: the Cowboys needed to be faster and tougher on defense.

Their offense was electric with playmakers everywhere, while their defense was among the worst in the league. Coming into the 2026 NFL draft, the front office made newly appointed defensive coordinator Christian Parker very happy, as the emphasis was on drafting defensive players. By the looks of it after this draft weekend, they might very well have found the pieces to turn things around.

Dallas Cowboys: 2026 NFL Draft Pick Breakdown

Luck and good fortune come in many ways, having an 11-percent chance of landing a premier player seems to indicate that luck has found you. Sitting at No. 12 overall in the draft, the chances of grabbing an impact defensive player was slipping. But as in every draft, teams may have their own path, usually throwing some unforeseen wrinkles in the selection order. A deep sigh of relief was exhaled when the New York Giants selected an offensive tackle at No. 10 overall. So whether it was luck, good fortune or voodoo, the Cowboys got who they wanted.

Defensive Stalwarts On Day 1 & 2

The biggest headliner to change this defense could be the addition of Jim Thorpe Award winning safety, Caleb Downs from Ohio State University. Downs was seen as one of the smartest and most athletically gifted players in this entire draft class. He finished his 2025 campaign with 68 tackles, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and 14 pass breakups. Downs consistently made an impact on the field leading the Buckeyes as a defensive captain.

What really stands out about this projected super star isn’t just his stats and awards, but how he plays the game. Coaches and scouts not only rave about Down’s physical ability, but gush over the elite football Intelligence that makes him truly stand out against the competition. Ever since he landed as a freshman, Downs has demonstrated an ability to read and react to plays faster than most. Former Alabama Coach Nick Saban called Downs the “most intelligent player” he has ever coached. An NFL scout made a reference that Downs is like a computer, processing opponents play concepts all game long – high praise indeed.

Downs’ level of play over his college career is nothing short of spectacular. Film reveals he rarely misses tackles, takes precise angles and is poised in playing man or zone coverage schemes. Although he may not be the biggest or have the fastest 40-time in this year’s draft, Downs pure football ability is undeniable as a complete football player.

For the Cowboys who are in desperate need of secondary help, Downs immediately comes in and fills a big hole. His ability to line up deep, play near the line of scrimmage, or even cover twitchy slot receivers make his skillset hard to find. This type of versatility will help this Dallas defense become more flexible and unpredictable when it comes to scheming up an offense.

Yet, Dallas didn’t just stop there. Also in the first round, they picked UCF standout edge Malachi Lawrence. Following the questionable trade down with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas selected what many people seem to think is a rising star with untapped potential.

Lawrence has a high motor and is very explosive off the edge. It’s a combination making him an immediate force that many offensive tackles won’t want to deal with. During his 2025 campaign for UCF, Lawrence tallied seven sacks, 11 tackles for loss and displayed a high volume of quarterback pressures. While his run defense can still be worked on, the future is looking bright for this young man to evolve under the 3-4 scheme that Parker is implementing. Draft gurus hyped the fact that Lawrence had the most tools as far as pass rush, using speed, power, hands fighting and agility. This supposedly was a Parker favorite, adding a playmaker to an improving defensive line.

Following their two first round selections, the Cowboys used the No. 92 overall pick to select Michigan Wolverines edge Jaishawn Barsham.

Barsham is an interesting prospect who gives the Cowboys some options. Barsham played DE and LB at Michigan, offering sideline-to-sideline speed and pass rush ability. This type of flexibility will help the Cowboys when figuring out where to place him. Parker stated that he was looking at Barsham to be his “Zach Braun”, playing as an interior linebacker that can create havoc.

Adding Depth on Day 3

The fourth round of this year’s draft was all about adding depth to positions of need and players with high upsides. The selection of offensive tackle Drew Shelton gives the Cowboys offense a young athletic lineman who has the necessary assets to give the coaches an option as an eventual starter.

The second pick of the fourth round was Devin Moore, a tall speedy corner who could become a starter in the league. The former Florida Gator has had a very strong career. This is highlighted by his 83.0 PFF cover grade despite having injury concerns that made him slide back a little in this draft. Many experts praised the pick, as Moore was looked at as a top-50 talent.

Rounding out the fourth round for Dallas was the selection of Alabama defensive linemen LT Overton, a nasty physical presence with an attitude that is elite at setting the edge. Interior line depth was much-needed after the trade of Osa Odighizuwa.

To round out this draft class, Dallas took a chance on East Carolina receiver Anthony Smith. Smith is your typical late-round flyer who you hope can pan out for the franchise. Smith has good size, speed, and the potential to develop into a reliable wide receiver if he continues to push himself.

Final Thoughts

After evaluating and looking at this 2026 NFL draft class, one thing is clear: the Dallas Cowboys added speed, toughness and versatility to every level on the defensive side of the ball. The addition of players like Downs, Lawrence and Barham are immediately plug-and-play pieces. These players bring enthusiasm, energy and a new identity. Combine that with other free agent and trade acquisitions, the new defense under Parker has a chance to be very good.

Yet, out of all the picks, Downs stands above them all. Many believe he is a future All-Pro, and a potential Hall of Fame player. Downs plays with a great deal of confidence, intelligence and intensity that separates him from the competition. If he develops the way the front office expects him to, he will become the leader of this defense for years to come.

In conclusion, the Cowboys 2026 class feels different from previous years. Instead of playing it safe, they went directly at players who fill a position of need. Obviously, there is still risk with drafting players due to injuries and development. However, the upside to the draftees selected this year is hard to ignore. If this draft class turns out the way they expect, they could be remembered as the group that helped Dallas rebuild their defense and take a big step toward being a Super Bowl Contender.
