NEWARK, DE — After playing Vanderbilt the week before, many expected the Delaware Blue Hens to run away with their Week 3 matchup against Coastal Carolina. Yet, in “The Cockfight” of 2026, the Chants proved to be a much worthier adversary than expected. In a back and forth gritty affair, the Blue Hens would squeak out a victory, 22-14. The quarterbacks for both teams made excellent plays against tough defensive pressure. And, the two defensive units shut down conversation of a shootout in this contest. Between the emergence of Deuce Bailey, to the steadfast approach of Delaware’s offense, these are my five takeaways from an exciting Week 3 matchup.

Deuce Bailey Emerges
Going into this season, not a lot of people took stock in Deuce Bailey becoming the starting quarterback for Coastal Carolina. He showed flashes at Missouri State last year as a true freshman. However, his 2026 season has proven to be a breakout. Coming into this matchup, the redshirt freshman had six passing touchdowns to zero interceptions. And on Saturday afternoon, he showed more poise than pressure against the Blue Hens.
In the first half, Bailey put together some impressive drives for the Chants. His first touchdown pass was a 62-yard connection to Goldie Lawrence, which took life out of “The Tub” in Delaware. Even more impressive, is that Bailey took a massive hit as he was letting go of the football, showcasing his poise in the pocket.

Bailey’s second touchdown was equally impressive. Facing a blitz from the Delaware defense, Bailey connected with Colton Hinton that gave the Chants the lead once again.

While Coastal would enter halftime in a 14-15 deficit (and ultimately lose 14-22), Bailey proved to be the star on the offense. If not for some bad drops and protection gaps, this game may have been very different.
And for the 2026 season, fans across the nation may be witnessing the breakout of the next great Group of 6 quarterback.
Slow Home Starts Continue
Entering this contest, many expected Delaware’s offense to thrive against Coastal. Instead, the first two drives of the offense ended in punts. And to be honest, the slow starts seem to be a theme for the Blue Hens at home this season.
In the first half of the game, the Delaware offense really struggled to find their footing. The Chants defense was putting on big hits and making great stops on third down. Further, they weren’t fooled by a lot of the trickery of the Blue Hens. Even with Delaware’s trick play passing touchdown, Sean Wilson was actually double-covered on the play – he just made a fantastic catch.
Going forward, the Blue Hens need to be able to start quicker, which means the gameplan has to either involve more wrinkles in the system, or better execution – or both. It’s still early in the season, but it’s something you want to see cleaned up by Ryan Carty and his offense.
Defensive Stand Out
As mentioned in my pregame, I thought there was a chance that this game could be a defensive showdown. That prediction turned out to be true – as the score was just 15-14 in Delaware’s favor entering halftime. While the Blue Hens’ defense actually showed more susceptibility than Coastal, they were able to get turnovers at the right time to stop the Chants in their tracks. On the other side, Coastal’s defense was quick and hard-hitting. Multiple times throughout the game a strong hit stopped Delaware from converting yardage. It was truly an impressive display from both teams.
Specifically for Delaware, it was great to see defensive coordinator Manny Rojas animated on the sideline throughout the contest. His passion trickled down to the rest of the unit that was having its issues against Deuce Bailey and the Chants offense in the first half.
Minicucci’s Poise on Display
One unexpected development in this game was Coastal’s ability to shut down the passing attack of Delaware. Head coach Ryan Carty admittedly loves to throw the football. Yet against the Chants, the Blue Hens really struggled to get anything going in the first half. However, quarterback Nick Minicucci kept poise throughout the contest.
After each score by the Chants, Minicucci wanted to keep the offense moving. And when they had successful plays, he was quick to initiate tempo to keep the defense on their heels. Specifically in the second half, his two-minute drill drive helped push the Blue Hens into the lead with a two-point conversion with just seconds left in the half. Considering how much the team struggled to move the ball in this contest, his ability to keep the chains moving with quick reads showcased a developing quarterback ready to take that next step as a playmaker.
After a big turnover on special team’s his first pass was a big touchdown to Sean Wilson, icing the game for the Blue Hens. The Delaware quarterback would end the game with over 300 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Going forward, that poise is going to be important with some massive conference games on the schedule this season. Minicucci is going to be the catalyst, and Delaware needs to make sure that composure stays present as the expectations rise.
This Needs to be a Rivalry
Dubbed “The Cockfight”, the matchup between the two chicken mascot-based football team needs to be continued going forward. The distance between the two teams isn’t far enough to where this can’t become a yearly (or every other year) occurrence. Further, with the trajectory of both programs, it could make a nice rivalry going forward. Plus, how can you not have fun with the name dubbed to the matchup between the two teams?
Whether or not they play in football again remains to be seen. But let me be the first to call for this matchup to be a new rivalry – or at least a continued meeting – between the two teams going forward.
