The Delaware Blue Hens open their 2026 college football season with a matchup against the Merrimack Warriors in Week 1. Ryan Carty returns after leading his team to an unprecedented 2025 season that saw the Blue Hens secure a bowl berth, victory, and becoming one of the hottest teams in Conference USA.
Despite coming from the FCS ranks, Delaware’s opening contest should be more about getting the rust off, than facing adversity. Yet, we’ll see if the Warriors put up a fight against the Blue Hens.

This will be the first time that these two teams will meet on the gridiron. This isn’t surprising, considering less than 10 years ago Merrimack was just a D2 program – and are currently an independent in the FCS ranks.
Speaking to the media ahead of their Week 1 matchup, Delaware head coach Ryan Carty addressed how Merrimack playing in Week 0 can help his team prepare for the contest on Thursday.
“They had a game where they played a really good opponent [last week], and had a chance to put a lot on tape for us to see. I think that’s an advantage for us. Hopefully we can limit the amount of disadvantages that we have when we get out there by just focusing in and practicing at a high intensity, [and] making sure we’re as clean as we can be.”
Coach also talked about the importance of quarterback Nick Minicucci getting a full offseason of reps, and stepping up his game after an impressive 2025 season.

Key Players for Delaware
It’s impossible to go into Week 1 without mentioning quarterback Nick Minicucci. After an injury to Zach Marker paved the way for him becoming the full-time starter, Minicucci finally received all of the first-team reps this offseason. That should pay major dividends for a player who took the FBS world by storm in 2025. Against Merrimack, I’m expecting Minicucci to put together a masterclass; attacking all three levels of the field, and spreading the wealth in the process.
On defense, Gavin Moul is likely the key player for the Blue Hens. An underrated player during his time with Delaware, Moul will be paramount in stopping the rushing attack and shutting off the middle of the field for the defense. If him and the unit can keep things clean on their end, it will be an easy victory for Delaware.
Key Players for Merrimack
In Week 0, Merrimack got thrashed by Rhode Island, 34-7. Yet on offense, wide receiver Bryce Goulet could be key for the Warriors. Last week, he had four catches for 67 yards, showcasing some big-play ability. With a two-quarterback system in effect and not much going on the ground, Goulet could be the opening for the Warriors to make big plays against a Delaware unit which has had some issues stopping them in the past.
On defense, linebacker Micah Green will be key for Merrimack. Last week he had nine tackles and set the pace for a defense that struggled. However, stopping Jo Silver and the running backs will be key to try and force Delaware to be one-dimensional. If the front seven aren’t able to contain the Blue Hens, Delaware will have their way with Merrimack on Thursday.
How Delaware wins vs. Merrimack in Week 1
To be honest, this should be an easy victory for Delaware. As long as they don’t make mistakes, the Blue Hens have the talent to where this contest needs to be a tune-up game for the regular season, and nothing more.
Expect the rushing attack to find lanes, Minicucci to spread the ball around, and the special teams to give Delaware advantageous field position. On defense, I’m expecting multiple turnovers and three-and-outs to the point where this game should be a one-sided affair.
