COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Maryland Terrapins fell short against the Virginia Tech Hokies in front of a sold-out home crowd on Saturday night, with the 35-26 loss snapping the Terps twenty-game non-conference win streak and melting away any momentum built from their hot start to the season. Maryland attempted to mount a late comeback, but the last-gasp effort was doomed after two failed two-point tries thwarted the Terrapins plans. Virginia Tech outplayed Maryland in all three phases, controlling the clock as well as the line of scrimmage to hand the Terps their first loss of the year.

Sellout Crowd Sent Home Sad
There was an electric atmosphere in The Shell for this highly anticipated matchup, and Maryland fans did their part by packing out the stadium for the first sellout of the season. With every seat in SECU Stadium spoken for, the Terrapins faithful created a palpable energy prior to kickoff and throughout the first half. Unfortunately, by the middle of the third quarter, the majority of fans remaining were wearing white and orange. Dejected Terps fans began exiting en masse after the Hokies went up 21 points to start the second half, heading home early to get a jump start on traffic.
Asked post-game why Maryland fans should continue their support after yet another big-time loss, head coach Mike Locksley calmly credited the crowd turnout while acknowledging there was still plenty of work to be done.
“It’s the type of environment that you want to have for your football team, and the fans did their part. We’ve got to do ours.”
Grunkemeyer Torches Terps Defense
Maryland’s defense was one of the best in the FBS through the first two weeks, but looked legitimately lost versus Virginia Tech. The Terrapins allowed 445 yards of total offense to the Hokies, with quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer orchestrating at an extremely elite level and combining for four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) in his dismantling of the Terps formerly formidable defense. Maryland simply had no answers for the Penn State transfer, as Grunkemeyer was on fire from start to finish, completing 31 of 39 passes for 314 yards while also making plays with his legs.
Talented Tight Ends Take Over
With each team boasting impact players at the tight end position, Maryland’s Dorian Fleming and Virginia Tech’s Luke Reynolds showcased why they were selected to the preseason John Mackey Award Watch List with impressive individual performances. Both future NFL draft picks stood out on Saturday night, with Fleming catching six passes for 72 yards and one touchdown, while Reynolds stole the show with 12 receptions for 107 yards and a score. With the professional game trending toward using more two and three tight end sets, don’t be surprised when both players are soon playing on Sundays.
Miscues Doom Maryland
The most unsettling part of Saturday’s loss was just how badly the Terrapins defense performed as a whole, struggling to create any pressure on the Hokies offense and giving up far too many explosive plays. Coming into the contest as one of the country’s top units, Maryland instead fell flat, as the Terps uncharacteristically missed multiple tackles, had constant coverage breakdowns, and were plagued by a plethora of penalties. The Terrapins tackling issues and lack of physicality were particularly shocking and must be corrected prior to conference play. It only gets tougher from here.
