A Bruins offense that was no better than mediocre a season ago, is now stacked with talent across the football field this offseason. With their reigning receiving leader transferring out, wide receiver Leland Smith now has the opportunity to claim that throne at UCLA.
The 6-foot-4 transfer could be the difference-maker head coach Bob Chesney needs. Smith’s frame and downfield ability make him a potential top option. He could also be the program’s first 1,000-yard receiver since 2017.
UCLA Football: Who is Leland Smith?
Leland Smith is a Houston, Texas native who played his high school ball at Strake Jesuit before emerging as a three-star JUCO recruit at Fullerton College.
In high school, Smith didn’t break out until his senior season, where he recorded 50 receptions for 845 yards and nine touchdowns in 10 games, earning First Team All-District honors. With no offers at the end of his high school tenure, Smith contributed to the Hornets at the junior college level.
In his lone JUCO season, he hauled in 26 catches for 655 yards and nine scores in just as many outings. Smith’s production merited him First Team All-SCFA National Southern Conference, Third Team All-American and was ranked as JUCO’s fourth-best wide receiver in 2023.

With strong back-to-back campaigns, Smith attracted 25 offers before committing to Purdue. His freshman year wasn’t one for the books, but appearances in all 12 games sparked promise for potential. Fast-forward to last season, Smith found himself back playing in California, but this time up North. It was San Jose State that unleashed a near 700-yard season for the second-year wideout.
Additionally, Smith erupted for four 100-yard games with the Spartans, earning Fourth Team Phil Steele All-Mountain West and All-Mountain West Honorable Mention honors.
Expectations for Smith in 2026
The senior is in line for possibly his best season yet. Smith’s 6-foot-4-inch frame already makes him a mismatch for defenders. Yet, pair his contested-catch ability with his speed, and he can be Nico Iamaleava‘s favorite target in 2026.
Smith is undoubtedly a great deep-ball threat and can evolve into a red zone machine. Only five touchdowns in his career is a bit underwhelming considering his size, but in an offense that has a quarterback that can extend plays and make circus-type throws, finding No. 0 in blue and gold shouldn’t be too difficult.
He’ll be joining a receiving core populated by fellow transfers, so a lot of competition for reps remains. Regardless of where Smith ends up in the depth chart, it’s hard not to keep that size and speed off the field for long. Even if he doesn’t command 10 targets a game, his natural skill set is enough to draw the attention of multiple defenders in coverage.

As mentioned, the Bruins have yet to have a 1,000-yard receiver since 2017, and Smith could be the one to end that drought. Last season was a down year for Iamaleava, and an improved group around him will boost his game, leading to better wide receiver production. We could very well see the two connect for 60 passes, 1,000 yards and near-double-digit scores.
Smith can ultimately be the safety valve that the Bruins’ offense desperately needs, and a player who can turn the tide of a game in an instant. Expect explosive plays and touchdowns to return to the Rose Bowl.
Who does Leland Smith most resemble?
When watching Smith on the gridiron, a lot of names come to mind. Though Texas A&M’s Mike Evans was an immediate thought, a more appropriate comparison would be Cincinnati’s Alec Pierce. Though not the most shining name, Pierce is a player who provides similar traits and production.

Both players are lengthy wideouts that have great success on the outside, winning jump balls and putting defenders on the wrong end of a highlight tape. They both have great body control and hands along the sidelines. Pierce likely edges Smith in route running, but the UCLA receiver is the more explosive player.
Regardless, there’s a lot to look forward to in Smith’s first year with the Blue and Gold, as he looks to be the most complete X receiver.
