FAU vs Florida 2026 Recap: Gators Send Message in 66-21 Rout

They say that nobody gets out of “The Swamp” alive, and that was especially the case for the FAU Owls.

In a Week 1 showdown with Florida, the Gators stomped the Owls to the tune of a 66-21 rout. Florida’s offense, whether on the ground or through the air, had its way with FAU’s hapless defense.

The Owls’ offense, while showing some bright spots, had some turnovers that really hurt their chances in this game.

Worst of all, FAU had plenty of the same issues from last season pop up against the Gators, especially in the discipline and penalty department.

It was a brutal start for FAU in 2026, and with Navy and FIU on the horizon, the Owls truly need to find a better version of themselves going forward.

Jadan Baugh Enters Takeover Mode

Heading into this game, a major key for FAU to have a chance revolved around stopping Florida running back Jadan Baugh. Spoiler alert: the Owls did no such thing.

On 14 carries, Baugh notched 160 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 11.4 yards per carry. The Gators’ superstar made players miss, broke tackles, and outran the defense on multiple occasions. On a key drive in the second quarter, Baugh ripped off a 25-yard run, and on the following play, he powered into the end zone to make it a 24-7 game.

Baugh was the centerpiece of the Florida offense, and he rewarded the Gators in a big way. There are plenty of running backs with power, but not many have the smoothness and burst that Baugh displays on a down-by-down basis.

FAU did not help their case in the slightest on Saturday night; their pursuit angles were horrible, the tackling form was subpar, and there were plenty of blown assignments.

But even if those things were better for the Owls, it would have been a very difficult task for them to slow down Baugh. The star Florida running back truly started his year on a great note, and it will be fun to see what he continues to do in 2026.

Aaron Philo and the Passing Game Roll

As fun as Baugh was for the Gators, the Florida passing game had a very good night against the Owls as well.

Aaron Philo, in his first start with the Gators, threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns on a 76-percent completion rate. The quarterback also added 20 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown.

A transfer from Georgia Tech, Philo looked comfortable and confident attacking all levels on the field. He hit big throws down the field and made top-tier throws over the middle between multiple defenders. Philo avoided pressure at a high rate, kept his eyes downfield, and consistently made plays. It was very impressive to see Philo in game action, especially when it came to his overall throwing.

Florida had plenty of wideouts step up for Philo in this game. TJ Abrams had a huge catch on a deep ball, while Dallas Wilson made contributions at all levels of the field. Bailey Stocketon, another Georgia Tech transfer, had a key touchdown for the Gators.

The best of the group, though, was Vernell Brown III. Brown III was explosive and dynamic whenever his number was called. He won vertically, won with his route running, and won after the catch against FAU defenders. His best play came on his 49-yard touchdown; catching a screen pass in space, Brown III broke a tackle, beat the angles from the FAU defense, and raced for what was the first touchdown of the game.

The Gators have plenty of weapons in the passing game, which extend beyond the main contributors in Saturday’s game against FAU. Micah Mays Jr., Duke Clark, and Byron Louis are some of the other names to know along those lines.

Florida’s game against the Owls may not be the norm for the Gators in 2026. However, between Philo’s success and the emergence of plenty of weapons, there should be plenty of offensive optimism going forward.

The Florida Defense Causes Havoc

On the defensive side of the ball, there is plenty of optimism for the Gators as well.

Despite giving up 396 total yards, Florida made plays at all three levels of the field. In the secondary, Kanye Clark was everywhere; the STAR generated multiple quarterback pressures and had a pass breakup. DJ Coleman had a pass breakup and an interception, while Dijon Johnson had multiple tackles, along with an INT of his own. Ben Hanks III had some impressive coverage, and J’Vari Flowers made multiple key tackles. And at linebacker, Myles Graham was everywhere for the Gators, leading the team with 10 total tackles

In the trenches, Florida had some real-deal impact from multiple players.

Brendan Bett and Jeramiah McCloud were impressive at interior defensive line; both players had multiple pressures on Veltkamp and were good against the run, while Bett forced a key fumble in the red zone late in the game. Jayden Woods was a force off the edge, generating multiple pressures while also contributing three solo tackles.

The best of the group, though, was Emmanuel Oyebadejo. A transfer from Jacksonville State, the defensive lineman was a force in every aspect of the game. He was a stout run defender and was a force as a pass rusher, generating multiple pressures and even notching a PBU at the line of scrimmage. Oyebadejo was quick on his feet, used his hands very well, and was able to win in a variety of ways.

At the college level, games are won and lost on defense, especially early in the year. Florida’s unit, while still meshing together, showed plenty of talent and upside in their drubbing of FAU. As more games are played, this group should continue to look better and better.

2025 Issues Plague FAU to Start 2026

For FAU to turn things around in 2026, the disicipline and execution of the overall team need to be at a high level. But through one game of the 2026 season, a large number of issues from last season have already started to flare up.

The Owls had nine penalties for 75 yards, an unacceptable number against a team like Florida. They had three turnovers, which Florida converted into 21 points. With those two statistics, the game result becomes very clear. However, that is not all.

On defense, the tackling effort was extremely subpar. FAU took horrible angles to the ball and had poor form when the ball carriers arrived. Communication was lacking in the secondary at times, leading to “second-chance” plays on scramble drills going in favor of Florida. The Owls’ defense also allowed Florida to turn multiple third downs into big gains. No matter what Florida did on offense, they had success.

Offensively, the play-calling and personnel usage were questionable at certain points of the game. Whether it was a fourth down speed option to the short side of the field or leaving starters in while down 30+ points, it felt like all aspects of FAU’s football team were feeling the pressure of this game.

There is plenty of time for things to be tweaked, changed, and improved. Positives, mainly on the offensive side of the ball, did exist for FAU against Florida.

However, the pressure is fully on for the Owls. There is no more time to wait, and the excuses have run out. FAU has the talent to succeed in 2026; it is now up to the coaches and the execution of those same players on the field to live up to the expectations.

Other Notes

• Kelby Valsin was arguably the best player on the field for FAU’s offense. Notching ten receptions and 92 yards, Valsin had an impressive TD grab late in the game for the Owls. He is going to be massive for the offense this year.
• Duke Clark is a star-in-the-making for Florida. The running back posted 65 yards and a touchdown on the ground while also adding a receiving touchdown. He has the burst, strength, nd speed to be a major difference maker in the present and future. I am sky-high on what Clark could be on offense as an overall playmaker.
• Easton Messer had 73 yards on even receptions, including an impressive catch down the field on a deep ball. Like 2025, the wideout will be a vital piece of the Owls’ 2026 season.
• Ethan Ervin impressed at running back tonight, notching 50 yards and a touchdown. The second-year player looked smooth and ran with power, even against a tough Florida defense. Ervin even showed some surprising burst on his carries tonight. If he gets this type of workload, he could be very fun this season.
• Micah Mays Jr. had one of the better catches of the night late in the game. He is a huge sleeper for Florida’s offense in 2026; I am a huge fan of his overall game.
• All Branden Hoch does is get open and make plays when he is on the field. This is the type of wideout FAU needs to use more often, as he can play smooth while also playing with a nice level of physicality.
• Nate Fischer needs to play way more for the Owls. He looked like one of the best linebackers on the roster late in the game, notching a sack and three total tackles. The San Diego transfer is the type of athlete and playmaker that would help the Owls immensely.
• Bryce Thornton is a hitter at defensive back, and he provided a huge one on Kelby Valsin on Saturday. The Florida safety, if healthy, could be a key piece for the Gators this year.
• Caden Veltkamp had some spotty accuracy + decision making at times, but the quarterback was lethal outside the numbers against Florida. He also hit some great throws down the field to his wideouts. If he becomes even a little more consistent with his mechanics and accuracy, this FAU offense could take a leap this year.
