Maryland vs Hampton 2026 Recap: Key Takeaways From Terps Blowout Win Over Pirates

COLLEGE PARK, MD — The Maryland Terrapins started off their 2026 season in style, cruising to a comfortable 62-0 Week 1 win over the Hampton Pirates. In front of a near-capacity crowd of 43,421 frenzied fans, the Terps took care of business and extended their nation-leading non-conference winning streak to 19 straight victories.

While the outcome itself is certainly no surprise, there was plenty to take away from Maryland’s first four quarters of play.

Malik Washington Out Of Sync Early

With expectations sky high entering his sophomore season, Maryland quarterback Malik Washington struggled somewhat with his ball placement to start this game.

Washington and senior wide receiver Kaleb Webb had an especially hard time connecting in the first half, with Webb dropping at least two deep passes that both would have been potential touchdowns.

Despite the early misfires, Washington was unspectacular but otherwise solid, finishing 19 of 31 passing (61%) for 186 yards and a short touchdown strike to Old Dominion transfer wideout Na’eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding.

I would have liked to see the Terrapins quarterback hit the vertical shots that were there, but that chemistry between Washington and his new receiving corps is clearly still a work in progress. The second-year starter should settle in as the schedule progresses, and the big plays downfield will eventually come.

Expect the Terps signal-caller to get it going next week against Connecticut, but the clear commitment to the ground game from new offensive coordinator Clint Trickett was undoubtedly a welcome development after Maryland struggled to consistently run the ball last season.

New-Look Running Game Runs Rampant

Although Washington was never really able to find his groove in this one, it didn’t end up mattering all that much with Maryland’s rousing rushing attack leading the way.

The Terrapins piled up a whopping 365 yards on the ground, with the highlight being an electric 94-yard first quarter touchdown dash from sophomore DeJuan Williams. Before leaving in the second frame with a reportedly minor injury, Williams totaled 116 rushing yards and two scores on just three totes.

In his stead, the Terps rotated through their deep stable of backs, racking up six total rushing touchdowns on the day to run away from Hampton and secure the decisive season-opening victory.

If Maryland can continue to rely on a punishing ground game to control the clock and grind down opponents, it will do wonders for their overall outlook this season.

Defense Dominates in Decisive Win

The Terrapins never let the opposing offense get into a rhythm in this game, with Maryland dialing up constant pressure leading to numerous big plays. The Terps defense totaled five sacks and three interceptions against an overmatched Hampton offensive unit, relentlessly harassing the Pirates and capitalizing on seemingly every opportunity.

Maryland had multiple standouts on the defensive side of the ball, with sophomore safety Messiah Delhomme snagging two interceptions while defensive linemen D.D. Holmes and Eyan Thomas tallied two sacks apiece. It was an impressive showing from the Terps big boys in the middle, with Derrick LeBlanc and Lavon Johnson also making multiple plays in the Pirates backfield.

While ending up with a shutout is always a good thing, perhaps even more pertinent was the Terrapins padlock-type play throughout, holding the Pirates to just 85 yards of total offense on the night. To use a baseball analogy, Maryland’s defense pitched a perfect game in this one.

Penalty Problems Persist

Speaking to the press earlier in the week, Terrapins head coach Mike Locksley hoped for a clean game without any penalties. Unfortunately, that wasn’t exactly the case Saturday night as the Terps were whistled for six inexcusable infractions. With the backdrop of a blowout, these miscues might seem of little consequence but against a better opponent could prove much more costly. Maryland would do well to quickly clean up these self-inflicted issues with their next outing coming on the road in a hostile environment.
