The Maryland Terrapins kick off their 2026 football schedule in Week 1 against the Hampton Pirates under the lights in College Park. Despite consecutive down years, hope remains for Maryland head coach Mike Locksley and his crew if he can right the ship and at least secure a bowl berth this season.
While facing an overmatched FCS opponent clearly won’t provide much of a competitive challenge, the Terrapins are instead aiming for elite execution in all three phases with a clean, cohesive, and commanding performance.

History and Excerpts
Saturday night’s showdown represents the first football matchup all-time between these two programs, as well as the first time Hampton has ever faced an FBS/Power Four opponent. First-year head coach Van Malone has the Pirates at 1-0 after crushing Virginia-Lynchburg in their season opener last weekend, while the Terps are seeking to start off their 2026 campaign victorious and continue adding to their nation-leading non-conference winning streak.
Since 2000, Maryland is a perfect 19-0 against FCS foes and under Locksley’s guidance the Terrapins have been incredibly dominant overall outside of Big Ten play, boasting an extremely impressive 20-1 non-conference record (eighteen straight wins) while averaging north of forty points per contest.
Talking to reporters on Tuesday, the Terps head coach preached poise and preparedness heading into their head-to-head with Hampton, hopeful that his squad can play a high quality brand of football in front of a friendly home crowd.

Key Players for Maryland
QB Malik Washington
Washington choosing to stay home this summer was undoubtedly the best outcome for Terps fans looking for signs of positivity to point to in this perennially under-achieving program. Maryland’s multi-talented starting quarterback cemented himself as one of the best young players in the Big Ten after a standout freshman season, and heading into year two the sky isn’t even the limit for the sophomore signal-caller. Expect the ascension for the Terrapins star to start on Saturday as he completely dismantles Howard though the air and on the ground.
RB DeJuan Williams
The scintillating sophomore from Baltimore made the preseason Doak Walker Award Watch List after leading Maryland in rushing with 501 yards as a freshman in 2025. Williams also set the Terps single-season record for receiving yards by a running back with 426 yards on 45 receptions. The explosive every-down workhorse is expected to again pace the Terrapins rushing attack and could very well develop into one of the premier backs in the country this season in a revamped scheme with a larger emphasis on the ground game. Getting Williams going in Week 1 will no doubt be a major priority for new play-caller Clint Trickett and fully anticipate the Terps second-year starter to run roughshod over Hampton.
TE Dorian Fleming
One of the most underrated pass catchers in all of college football, Fleming enters the fall on the John Mackey Award Watch List after the junior tight end recorded 40 receptions for 351 yards and three touchdowns for Maryland last year en route to earning All-Big Ten honorable mention accolades. Don’t be surprised when the speedy seam-stretching weapon shows out as the focal point of the Terps passing plan against the Pirates.
CB Amari Jackson
A veteran defensive back who joined the Terrapins through the transfer portal from Boston College this spring, Jackson is finally fully healthy after years of dealing with unfortunate injury luck and is expected to provide immediate experience and production in Maryland’s retooled secondary rotation this season. Formerly-dismissed defender Dontay Joyner will likely need some time to reacclimate to the Terps roster after being welcomed back to the team this week, giving Jackson ample opportunity to prove himself as playmaker to rely on.
Key Players for Hampton
QB Jalen Woods
The transfer from Southern University got his first extensive snaps as a starter under center in an up-and-down Week 0 showing, with Woods tossing three touchdown passes but still turning the ball over twice (one interception and one fumble) and also taking one sack against a squad from the National Christian College Athletic Association. Maryland’s defense should have no problem cranking up the pressure even higher and forcing the inexperienced passer into multiple turnovers and sacks.
RB Amari Pryear
Nicknamed “Ferrari Mari”, the dynamic five-foot-six freshman running back showed off significantly fleet feet in his first collegiate action, rushing eight times for 132 yards (including a slick 65-yard scamper) in Hampton’s suffocating season opening victory. Maryland refusing to allow Pryear to get loose for explosive chunk gains will be crucial to snuffing out the Pirate’s offense and leaving them lost at sea.
DL Korede Sogbesan
The Laurel, MD native and preseason All-CAA pick tallied four total tackles, one and a half tackles for loss, and one sack in Hampton’s Week 0 win, but facing Maryland’s much more formidable offensive line is a whole different animal entirely. The six-foot-three, 245 pound pass rusher’s hopeful homecoming may instead hurt like hell, with heaping helpings of double teams and pulling blockers the menu being served to him Saturday night at SECU Stadium. The Terps offensive line identifying and neutralizing Sogbesan will be key to opening up rushing lanes as well as keeping clean pockets in pass protection.
Why Maryland Wins in Week 1
The Maryland Terrapins fully intend to reinvent their running game this season in Trickett’s overhauled system behind their experienced offensive line. Look for the Terps to demonstrate a physical, downhill rushing attack early and often as they dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball in this one.
Maryland will also be featuring a brand new group of pass-catchers, with the aforementioned Fleming a familiar face that the Terrapins young quarterback can rely on while the wide receivers establish themselves. Transfers Chris Durr Jr. (Wyoming) and Na’eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding (Old Dominion) will pair with holdovers Kaleb Webb and Jordan Scott to form a potentially formidable foursome out wide, with each bringing their own unique skillsets to the table.
Defensively, senior linebacker Daniel Wingate and the Terps should have an absolute field day with an objectively overmatched FCS offense, forcing the Pirates into costly mistakes with constant pressure and copious physicality.
Holding decidedly distinct advantages on offense and defense, Maryland should walk away with an easy blowout win over Hampton if they can simply stay poised, limit penalties, and play the more physical brand of football for all four quarters.
