UCLA football is finally back. The highly anticipated season for first-year Bruins head coach Bob Chesney begins on the road at Berkeley.
UCLA vs. Cal 2026 College Football Preview
“It sounds like it’ll be sold out [at California Memorial Stadium], which is great,” Chesney said. “It sounds like a spirited group, and [we’re] excited to get a chance to go out there and deal with that. I think we all thrive in those types of environments.”
An ESPN primetime matchup between UCLA and Cal revives a rivalry that’s been on pause since the collapse of the PAC-12 in 2024. It’ll be a war between two sides that fight for bragging rights and a 1-0 start to the 2026 season.
UCLA Bruins vs. Cal Bears: History
These two storied programs are accustomed to one another, with hundreds of hours spent battling on the gridiron. It’s been a head-to-head series dominated by the Bruins with an all-time 58-35-1 record. However, the last laugh was had by the Bears when they stomped into the Rose Bowl, defeating UCLA 33-7 in 2023.
Since then, no love has been lost, and the build-up to this season opener has been a joy to witness. Both sides refuse to give an inch as they seek to meet strong expectations this year.
The Bruins enter the Saturday night contest slightly favored at -1.5.

Key Player for UCLA
The conversation around Westwood all offseason has been the growth and development of their senior quarterback Nico Iamaleava.
The former five-star recruit is entering his second year with the Blue and Gold, and all the lights will shine on No. 9. With an underwhelming and disappointing 2025 campaign tucked away, a new year with everything lined up for success sets up Iamaleava to take over.
First, it’s his dual-threat ability. Iamaleava is great at using his legs to not only escape the pocket and extend plays, but also to bail when needed. He has the wheels and durability to force defenses out of man coverage and start dicing them in zone looks.
If his legs weren’t enough trouble for defenders, his arm makes him two handfuls to deal with. Iamaleava has every throw in his arsenal and has the skill to layer passes over defenders. Given an improved supporting cast, the Bruins have a legitimate game-changer at the helm. The Bruins will only go as far as their quarterback will take them. He’ll have a load lifted from his shoulders in the ground game, allowing him to open up more as a passer, especially on the big plays. The more explosive Iamaleava can be, the more the playbook will open up for his offense.
Key Player for Cal
Without question, this game is headlined by the two star quarterbacks.
At 20-years-old, Cal’s Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is one of the most electric players in college football. If his freshman season was just a glimpse of his full potential, then we might be staring at a future Heisman Trophy winner. The second-year quarterback has sparked hope back into Cal football. Similarly, Iamaleava and JKS have new head coaches whom they’ve developed a connection with over the offseason.
“[Sagapolutele] does a lot of things really well,” Chesney told reporters. He’s mobile, but he’s not going to break away a giant run because he’s going to keep his eyes downfield and he trusts his arm. He will do a really good job of throwing people open, even if you’re covered.”
When you talk about no fear and total confidence, it’s Sagapolutele. The lefty has what it takes to take a massive step in his development, and Saturday night in front of a tarp-less, sold-out stadium could be what sparks that.
UCLA’s Road to Victory in Week 1
It’s easy to get caught up early in the season, but this game might be a finalist for game of the year. With two teams who have a lot to prove and much more to lose, it’ll be primed for 60 minutes of nail-biting football.
To escape the hostile environment with a win, UCLA must find a way to stop Cal’s rushing attack. By eliminating the run game, it keeps the Bears’ offense one-dimensional, making it a much more viable task. Adam Mohammed will be the lead back behind JKS, and he’s no stranger to tearing up UCLA’s defense. Last season the former Husky rushed for 108 yards en route to a 48-14 win over Iamaleava’s Bruins.
Chesney and his defense must limit the damage because a high-scoring contest is inevitable.
To keep winning in the headlights, Iamaleava’s offense desperately must extend drives and find the end zone consistently. He’ll have a former 1,000-yard rusher in his backfield in Wayne Knight as well as former Cal Bears Mikey Matthews and Jaivian Thomas contributing to the output. The weapons will be present for the senior quarterback to light the scene up.
Regardless, there’s a world where both teams could win in any fashion — it’s that close. More intriguing, the chess match between Cal head coach Tosh Lupoi and Chesney’s in-game adjustments will be one to monitor.
