The convoluted football history between these schools stretches back over a hundred years, starting in 1919 with a 6-0 Maryland victory over Virginia Tech in College Park. The teams played twenty-four total times before the Terps left the Southern Conference to help form the ACC, but didn’t schedule each other once from 1950 to 1990. The rivalry was rekindled after a forty-year hiatus in a handful of head-to-head bouts that mostly went the Hokies way. With the availability of their top two rushers very much in doubt, USC transfer Harry Dalton III will likely be asked to shoulder a much larger load for the Terps this weekend. The Penn State transfer followed Franklin to Blacksburg this spring after starting seven games for the Nittany Lions last fall. While looking good against lower-level competition is still something, Maryland’s defense presents a different challenge entirely and will bring relentless pressure to try forcing the junior signal-caller into multiple mistakes.
RB Jeffrey Overton Jr.
An explosive play waiting to happen, Overton is the Hokies big-time playmaker that the Terps need to keep in check. Keeping the talented runner contained is easier said than done, but rallying to the football and taking proper angles will do wonders to mitigate the risk he poses every time he touches the rock. Slowing Overton down and making the Virginia Tech offense one-dimensional is a sure-fire strategy to ensure a Terrapins victory.
How The Terps Win in Week 3
Maryland has a great chance to win against Virginia Tech if they can continue to keep miscues to a minimum. The Terps are looking to stay consistent after combining for only eleven penalties in their first two games while committing zero turnovers. Winning the turnover battle and limiting the number of mistakes will go a long way in deciding the outcome of this inter-state battle.
The deciding factor might be the Terrapins ferocious defense, a unit brimming with confidence after two dominant outings to start the schedule. Maryland comes into the contest tied for first nationally in red zone defense, ranking fourth in total defense and fifth in rushing defense. The Terps ten total sacks are currently tops in the Big Ten, tying Tennessee for fourth nationally through two games.
