The hype around this UCLA football team is justified. Being 2-0 against quality teams sets a limitless ceiling for the Bruins.
UCLA vs Purdue 2026 College Football Preview
The Blue and Gold will have their first jab at a conference opponent Saturday at 8 p.m. when the Boilermakers step into the Rose Bowl.
UCLA head coach Bob Chesney is not one to get caught up in the limelight, keeping his focus on the task at hand — facing 1-1 Purdue.
“It’s still the same process you’re in,” Chesney emphasized about the scheduled Big Ten matchup. “You just have to understand that it means a little bit more.”
Matchup History
It’s been nearly half a century since we’ve seen the Bruins matchup against the Boilermakers. However, with five games to account for in the head-to-head series, UCLA looks to remain undefeated (3-0-2) and steal the first meeting against Purdue as conference competitors.
Chesney’s squad has yet to enter a 2026 contest as an underdog, as they head into the weekend as 14-point favorites.

Key Players for UCLA
It’s never about one player when 22 are on the field, but quarterback Nico Iamaleava is due for a massive performance. The senior signal-caller has not particularly shone in either of the wins — though the Bruins have not needed him to. But back-to-back games with an interception and no passing touchdowns is unusual for Iamaleava.
He has a running back committee behind him that has been tearing defenses apart, averaging 245.5 rushing yards a game. The largest contributor is transfer back Wayne Knight, who is off to a historic start. He’s the first Bruin to start his Blue and Gold tenure with six non-passing touchdowns through two games, and is just the eighth UCLA player to reach that mark since 1970.
Nonetheless, No. 9 is the ultimate x-factor and can turn these big wins into even bigger ones. Whether he finds the end zone with his legs or arm on Saturday, he should be heavily involved in what could turn into a shootout. If it doesn’t, the Boilermakers pose a stout run defense that could front as a roadblock, so the unbeaten record could legitimately fall into the hands of Iamaleava and how he performs.
Key Players for Purdue
The Boilermakers have been on an offensive heater to start the season, and their quarterback Ryan Browne has been practically perfect — 55/71 passing for 646 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. The junior has been the catalyst behind the nation’s 12th-best passing attack.
Additionally, his running back Fame Ijeboi is a stud himself. The second-year rusher is already nearing 300 all-purpose yards and has tallied four scores as well. Ijeboi — a back who has never coughed up a fumble — has caught the attention of Chesney heading into their clash.
“He’s really good,” Chesney said about Ijeboi. “He has a Wayne [Knight] feel to him. He’s low to the ground, his body balance is phenomenal, his leg drive on contact is unbelievable — you don’t really see him get tackled a lot.”
It’ll be up to the two behind Purdue’s center to find ways to exploit a Blue and Gold defense that has found ways to bend without breaking.
Challenge for Bruin Faithful
For years, UCLA football has been an afterthought in Westwood. Fan engagement has been lacking, making it difficult to fill the historic Rose Bowl.
Additionally, being located in Pasadena — 25 miles from campus — doesn’t encourage the student body to attend home games.
The solution first starts with a better football team. 2-0 is a step in the right direction, and Chesney has been the backbone. Second, find a way to bring students to attend games. Why not make it free? That’s exactly what newly appointed UCLA CEO and athletic director Tim Harris has done for all regular-season home football and men’s and women’s basketball games.
“Our students are the heartbeat of UCLA,” Harris said in a statement. “Their passion, energy and pride create an atmosphere that makes a difference for our student-athletes and coaches. We want as many students as possible experiencing UCLA Athletics, supporting their fellow Bruins and helping us build one of the best home environments in college sports. We need our students to show up, be loud, and make a difference.”
With free student tickets and a thriving football team, the Rose Bowl should expect larger crowds to flood its gates in the coming weeks.
UCLA Bruins Path to Victory
Conference play usually ramp up the competition, but for UCLA, it’s already had to face noteworthy opponents. So, the adjustment to a higher-skilled matchup shouldn’t fall as a disadvantage come kickoff.
The Bruins don’t look like the team they were a year ago. The offense is consistently feeding off explosive plays and has been a touchdown magnet. Meanwhile, the defense is forcing turnovers and keeping deficits manageable. They’re coming off a strong outing against SDSU where they scored 28 second-half points, allowed just 45 passing yards and troubled the Aztecs to a 2-12 on third-down conversion rate.
Carrying that defensive performance into this week is a much taller task given the offensive firepower Purdue has to offer. UCLA must find ways to steal possessions from a very ball-secure team and find their offensive rhythm early. It can’t afford to have a scoreless first half again. Iamaleava must use his legs to open up the passing game, and undoubtedly keep the ball out of harm’s way.
The deciding factor will likely fall on the success of the run game from both teams. Whichever sideline can control the flow of the game will leave victorious.
